That day was the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month in 2019, when the year-end was approaching. As the saying goes: once the eighth day of the twelfth month has passed, it is the Lunar New Year. That day was unforgettable for 46-year-old Wang Li (pseudonym); she made her husband's favorite dumplings, filling the entire refrigerator; She bought a new outfit for her high school son, transferred 2,000 yuan to her bank card, and left a message: “I am going out to work; you need to learn to take care of yourself from now on.” She took one last look at this familiar home, filled with reluctance as the words of Almighty God echoed in her ears from the Communication Sermon: “You can leave home full-time to fulfill your duty alone, entrusting your husband and son to God; what is there to worry about?” And so, she rode her electric bike and disappeared into the biting cold wind with a sister named Xiao Zhen (pseudonym)...
Wang Li began to come into contact with Almighty God in 2012 through a relative's introduction, believing in the “Communication” sermons of Almighty God, especially the idea that if she believed well, God could help resolve marital conflicts and make her husband better and her son more obedient. After joining Almighty God, in order to attend meetings on time, she first swapped shifts with colleagues; when it was inconvenient to swap shifts, she paid someone to cover for her. Later, she actively transferred to a lower-paying job with more relaxed management, and eventually, she simply took leave to attend gatherings. Starting in May 2019, the sisters in the CAG (Church of Almighty God) repeatedly urged her to leave home full-time to “fulfill her duty,” saying that this would “prepare more good deeds” for herself and her family, so that when disaster struck, her family could be saved by God. She was both afraid that not leaving home to “fulfill her duty” would bring some calamity, such as a car accident or illness, and felt powerless to resolve the conflicts between her and her husband and her son's rebellion. In her indecision, she had to submit to the “arrangements of God's family” out of various fears. In November 2019, Wang Li resigned, and a month later, she resolutely left home to serve the “Almighty God” full-time, preparing to go abroad.
However, Wang Li's plans to go abroad were put on hold due to the sudden outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020. Nevertheless, she did not return home; instead, she chose to live incognito in a town 20 kilometers away from her home, dedicating herself wholeheartedly to serving the “God's family”. On the first New Year's Eve after leaving home, she unknowingly returned near her home in the evening from a gathering, and upon looking up, she saw the character “Fu” (福) reflected in the opposite window, flickering with the New Year's dinner of a neighboring family. A wave of sadness surged in her heart; at that moment, she felt the natural emotions of a wife and mother, but this thought was quickly suppressed by the “corrupt nature” mentioned in the teachings of Almighty God. She dared not think further, as it was not approved by “God”.
The days of evangelism became exceptionally busy; every day she had to find ways to secretly go to various villages to teach newcomers, supervise the meeting points, help store supplies, select “Reception Families” and the “Stewards”, and engage in other complicated tasks like “writing testimonies”, leaving her little time to think about home. The illusory doctrines of “doomsday theory” and “great disasters are imminent” filled her life, causing her to gradually stop thinking about home. Over the course of three years, she lived in different “Reception Families”, and under the cult's inducement of “preparing good deeds for oneself”, she used her own funds to purchase a laptop to spread videos and materials about the Almighty God, as well as “sermons”. In three years, she went from being an “evangelist” to a “church leader,” and then to being responsible for “nurturing” in the community, pouring all her passion into the Almighty God. After the pandemic, she received orders to prepare her passport and cash, ready to go abroad at any time. Until the day she was reported by the public for frequent “evangelism,” she had never thought of seeing her husband, son, or any other family members again.
Every morning for three years, her husband would wait at the intersection where Wang Li had disappeared, hoping for her return, and even though he was filled with disappointment, he never gave up; only those who have experienced such feeling can truly understand.
Wang Li said that once she decided to leave, she never thought about returning home. The endless longing and sorrow she brought to her family after leaving were things she had never considered. However, she could not let go of the regret of missing her child's coming-of-age ceremony. Over the years, her relationship with her husband, due to her faith in God, not only did not improve but instead led her further away from the happiness she had desired, as Wang Li found herself increasingly distanced from the life she wanted, having lost her job and abandoned her family.
When I first met Wang Li, she was filled with resentment, and her words were full of doubts and questions. Although she tried to conceal it, her face was marked by inner struggle and rigidity. With the help of anti-cult volunteers, Wang Li recognized the evil intentions and ugly nature of the CAG. The Almighty God, under the guise of “fulfilling one's duty” by leaving home, claims to be “preparing good deeds” for oneself. In reality, it deceives followers with twisted logic and heretical teachings. The long-term indoctrination of these fallacies makes followers unaware of the subconscious changes in their thinking, leading them to unconsciously harbor resentment towards “outsiders,” including their closest relatives, abandon familial bonds, harbor hatred for society, and resist the law. The followers also become brainwashed without realizing it, wholeheartedly engaging in “evangelism,” which is merely about recruiting people into the cult. The so-called “contributions” are actually just a means for the Almighty God to collect money. The contradictions in life need to be resolved with scientific and rational methods; with the right mindset, the path becomes smoother. She deeply regrets her past obsession with the cult of Almighty God and hopes that by sharing her experiences, people will understand the various evils of CAG, in order to save more individuals who are obsessed with cults.
Now, Wang Li has returned to her family, restarting the second half of her life with a positive and optimistic attitude, and has won the understanding and love of her relatives through her actions; all the delayed beauty is on its way.
I hope that on the way tomorrow, the sun will be warm, the clouds will be leisurely, and the world will be free of evil!
